prosperous new year and that we can help you make a few improvements
that will strengthen your business. That’s what it’s all about, anyway,
isn’t it? People helping people? That’s what sets America apart from
other countries.

I remember when I was a newly minted CEO. My first shot at being the
leader of the band. I thought I knew it all. I thought I had the world
by the tail. I still remember my first day. A good friend, a man older
than I with a little gray in his hair came into my office and sat down.
After I had finished telling him how I was going to set the world on
fire, he looked me right in the eye and made one statement — one very
profound statement: “You might feel like you’ve got the world by the
scruff of the neck, and you’re ready to start whipping it into shape,
but the fact is you’ve just jumped onto the back of a tiger. What you
need to know about that is that you ride until the tiger gets tired —
not until you do.”

I’ve been waiting since that day for the tiger to get tired. Some
days I feel squarely centered on his back, with little to worry about.
Other days, I know if he even looks over his shoulder he will be able
to devour me.
