Seth Godin has a great post on why you don’t need a resume. The part that really caught my eye was this comment:
“Great jobs, world class jobs, jobs people kill for… those jobs don’t get filled by people emailing in resumes. Ever.”
I know that’s been the case in my career. When I need a manager for
a key position, I never solicit resumes. I always start by thinking of
people I know — people I’ve worked with, people I’ve met, people I’ve
heard about, people I’ve competed with — and prioritize the list by
whom I’d most like to have on my team. Then it’s off to the phones for
some recruiting.
Personally, I’ve never had to go looking for work. Work has always
found me. I think that’s true for many people. If you’re good at what
you do, people will be finding you. In that regard, a resume may well
be unimportant.
The key to success in your career is not being a great writer of
resumes. It’s being a great example of the best your field has to offer.
