The old cliche is that by doing what you’ve always done, you’ll get
what you’ve always got.  My experience in business is that doing what
you’ve always done will get you a little less than you’ve always got.
I remember one business man who had a model that always worked.  He
would tell me over and over, “This is the way to make money.  It’s
easy, it’s painless and it’s guaranteed.”

But even though this model was incredibly successful years ago (and
still is, though not to the same degree,) times have changed.  The
business world isn’t what it was in the ’80’s and this business model
doesn’t apply to the same degree it did then.

Businesses are living, breathing creatures that are (or should be)
constantly evolving to take advantage of a business climate that is
also constantly changing.  For example, in the ’80’s nobody used email
(I don’t think it was even available.)  It wasn’t a part of the
business culture and it wasn’t necessary.  But can you imagine trying
to do business today without email?  Those who are stuck in the past
(on a model that worked then) say, “I never used email in the past, and
I made millions of dollars.  Why fix it if it ain’t broke?”

Can you do business today without email?  Sure.  Many businesses
do.  Can you maximize your business today without email?  Of course
not.  Email is part of the culture and you have to have it to be
competitive.  And it’s not just email we’re talking about here.  There
are literally hundreds of principles this applies to.

If you’re riding and old tired horse, and you haven’t evolved in
your model for years, you’re not reaching your full potential.  Plain
and simple.  If you’re doing exactly what you’ve always done, you’re
going to get a little less than you’ve always got, month in, month out,
until you are getting so little it no longer makes sense to stay in
business.  Make sure your business is evolving with the times.  Stay
current so you can maximize your potential.
